Digital Technologies in Archaeology

A guest lecture at Baitursynuly University was delivered by Jack Berner, a lecturer at Washington University in St. Louis.

For first- to third-year history students and faculty members of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at KRU, a PhD Candidate in Anthropology delivered an online lecture titled “Digital Archaeology.”

The lecture was held as part of the course “Digital Technologies in Archaeology.”

At the opening of the lecture, Serikzhan Ismailov, Head of the Department of Social Sciences and Humanities, emphasized the key role of digitalization in modern archaeological research.

Almas Zhalelov, a lecturer at the department, presented an overview of the development of digital archaeology and outlined its current state and future prospects in Kazakhstan.

The keynote presentation was delivered by Jack Berner, who provided an overview of archaeological research in the United States and shared his own experience in applying digital methods, GIS technologies, and artificial intelligence in the study of archaeological sites in California, the Andes mountain range, and Central Asian countries. Particular attention was given to sites in the Kostanay Region, including Kamysty and Bestamak.

The research presented is directly related to the lecturer’s academic focus on the study of urbanism and urbanized landscapes using GIS and digital technologies.

The online lecture generated strong interest among participants and enabled them to become familiar with international experience in applying modern digital research methods and artificial intelligence technologies in archaeology.
