AI – A Friend or a Rival to Lawyers?

An interactive discussion was held by the Department of Criminal and Civil Law and Procedure at the Faculty of Economics and Law of KRU.

As part of the university’s initiatives promoting the concept of “Law and Order,” students engaged in a lively debate on the topic: “The Future of Jurisprudence: AI – a Friend or a Rival to Lawyers?”

The discussion included elements of a training workshop and was organized for senior students enrolled in the “Jurisprudence” and “Judicial and Law Enforcement Activities” programs.

The event aimed to provide future professionals with an up-to-date understanding of the digital transformation of the legal field and to enhance their ability to critically analyze the opportunities and limitations of artificial intelligence in the context of their future careers.

The discussion was based on analytical materials presented during a recent webinar by well-known lawyer Serik Aitbayev, hosted on the specialized legal platform Pravmedia IS “Paragraph.”

Using relevant materials from a leading practicing Kazakhstani attorney allowed participants to explore the use of AI not only from a theoretical perspective but also in a practical context related to Kazakhstan’s legal practice realities.

During the discussion, students examined the key aspects of AI’s impact on the legal profession, including:

The event took place in an interactive format, with students demonstrating a high level of awareness and a mature understanding that AI will inevitably become part of a lawyer’s professional toolkit.

“We saw that our students are ready not only to use technology formally but also to think critically about its role,”
— noted Natalia Korytnikova, Senior Lecturer at the Department and moderator of the event.
“It was emphasized that AI is a powerful assistant in analyzing large volumes of data, but it can never replace human legal consciousness, intuition, and moral responsibility, which form the foundation of justice.”

The materials used during the discussion will serve as a basis for developing practical assignments aimed at helping future lawyers acquire skills for working with intelligent legal assistants.
