An Open-Air History Lesson

As part of the courses “Modern History of Kazakhstan” and “Local History Studies,” Aibek Shalgimbekov, a lecturer at the Department of History of Kazakhstan at the Pedagogical Institute of Baitursynuly University, organized an off-site class for students at the mausoleum of Ybyrai Altynsarin.

Educational visits for history students to the mausoleum of the great educator of the Kazakh steppe have already become an annual tradition, consistently upheld by the lecturer.

The off-site lessons are conducted in an engaging format: students not only study the material but also experience history firsthand.

In an open-air setting, they immerse themselves more deeply in the subject, while the lecturer shares insights into the life of Ybyrai Altynsarin, his pedagogical work, educational materials, and his contribution to the establishment of schools.

According to the lecturer, such classes are also important from a practical perspective. Future teachers learn how to organize excursions and off-site lessons, developing skills that will be essential in their professional careers.

The excursion concluded with a symbolic ritual: students rang a steppe bell, which, according to tradition, brings good luck and academic success.

They then shared shelpek (traditional flatbread), which they had brought with them.
