The Department of Journalism and Communication Management at Baitursynuly University recently held its traditional student research competition dedicated to the memory of the talented poet, journalist, and educator Baytursyn Ilyas.
Baytursyn Ilyas devoted his entire life to the word. He worked as a correspondent for the legendary newspaper Socialist Kazakhstan (today Egemen Kazakhstan) and taught at Baitursynuly University for many years, mentoring generations of young journalists.
The primary goal of the competition is to remind students of Professor Ilyas’ life and work, honor his memory, and inspire future journalists to develop their creative potential and love for the word.
As in previous years, the competition was timed to coincide with the writer’s birthday. This year, students from all years of the department participated.
Participants presented their research, spoke about the life and work of Baytursyn Ilyas, recited his poems, and shared personal reflections on his literary contributions.
The jury included practicing journalists from the region and correspondents from the newspaper Qostanay tany.
"Even if you’re not ready for classes, learn the poems of Akhmet Baitursynov!" – this phrase was often repeated to students by the writer, recalls jury member and journalist Zangar Sanay. – Today, it serves as a reminder of his life wisdom.
By the jury’s decision, first-year student Mereim Kubekova was awarded a scholarship of 50,000 KZT. Other participants received Baytursyn Ilyas’ book Patsha Kөnili.
The organizing committee also announced that next year, the competition will be held in a new format – the winner will be the student who best memorizes and presents the poems of Akhmet Baitursynov.
It is worth noting that Classroom No. 212 in the main building of Baitursynuly University has been named after Baytursyn Ilyas. His students made a significant contribution to the classroom’s design: they purchased equipment, arranged the space, and compiled creative works of their mentor.
Through this event, the department continues its proud tradition of honoring the memory of its teacher, preserving his legacy, and passing on the love of the word to new generations of journalists.
