Today marked the launch of the “My Yard, My Garden” environmental project, part of the nationwide Taza Kazakhstan initiative.
One hundred fruit trees were planted near the university’s academic building on Abay Avenue. Everyone picked up a spade: students, lecturers and KRU’s leadership.
“Caring for nature goes beyond a single day or event,” said Zhenis Zharlygasov, KRU’s Vice-Rector for Research, Innovation and Digitalisation. “We have planted young apple, pear and plum trees. Young people need to understand that KRU’s environmental future is shaped by the work we do together today.”
Preparations began well in advance.
One hundred planting holes were dug, and a hundred spades and just as many watering cans filled with water were made ready.
The idea is to create a shared initiative that generations of students and lecturers will nurture and pass on.
Five varieties of apple trees will be planted on one side of the building, with plum trees on the other.
Some of the young pear trees will also grace the grounds near the student residence.
This is only the beginning. Each tree will need regular care to take root, grow strong and bear fruit.
The students hope that one day they will taste apples they have grown themselves.
Perhaps this is the project’s greatest value: leaving a living legacy after graduation, one that will grow alongside Baitursynuly University and endure for generations of the KRU community.
