Picking Up Speed

A Baitursynuly University delegation is in China this week for the international Formula Student engineering competition.

The project aims to develop students’ engineering mindset and prepare highly qualified professionals.

Graduates emerge ready to contribute to the automotive industry, equipped with practical skills and experience.

Students work through the entire development cycle, from theoretical research and computer modelling to programming CNC machines.

For the competition, student teams must design, build and test a prototype racing car.

Baitursynuly University Rector Seitbek Kuanyshbayev says the delegation is studying every aspect of the competition so that KRU’s racing car can take its place on the starting grid at a future Formula Student event.

The competition assesses every aspect of the vehicle, including technical performance, design, reliability and safety.

Valery Sisin, Head of KRU’s Centre for Advanced Mechanical Engineering Technologies, is taking careful note of these requirements.

It was under his leadership that our students built their first racing car.

Everything, from the initial idea and model development to the design of individual components, was completed at KRU.

Representatives of the university’s automotive industry partners attended the car’s official launch in spring 2026.

As the Rector noted at the time, the car marked a symbolic first step in bringing education and the automotive industry together.

“To establish a fully fledged domestic automotive brand in Kostanay, we need to start with student projects.

Our main mission is to prepare professionals who are ready to work in mechanical engineering. While still at university, students should gain a practical understanding of how a car is assembled and how it works.”

Every component of KRU’s racing car was first digitally modelled and tested through computer simulations. The final version was produced only after successful simulations.

Our single-seat racing car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just three seconds.

Students from KRU’s Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Energy and Information Technology demonstrated this performance.

We are confident that our car will prove itself at a future international Formula Student competition. For now, we are gaining experience and picking up speed!
