How to Recognise a Crisis and Support Someone

From October 14 to 21, Baitursynuly University held a professional development course entitled “Preventing Suicidal Behaviour and Providing Support in Crisis Situations”.

The training was organised under a memorandum of cooperation between the Military Prosecutor’s Office of the Kostanay Garrison and the university.

The programme was developed by KRU’s Centre for Inclusive Education and Psychological Support in collaboration with the Department of Psychology.

The trainers were Viktoria Khakimova, a psychologist at Polyclinic No. 1, and Taras Nagaytsev, a psychologist at the Kostanay Regional Mental Health Centre.

Participants included military psychologists, a deputy military unit commander responsible for educational, ideological and social work, and Kostanay Regional University’s deputy deans for student affairs.

During the course, participants learned to identify signs of psychological crisis and suicide risk, follow response procedures in challenging situations and provide initial psychological support.

Particular attention was given to effective communication, recognising warning signs and creating a safe environment where people can speak openly about their experiences and seek support.

Practical sessions helped participants consolidate their knowledge and practise ways of supporting people facing difficult life circumstances.

Participants received certificates upon completing the course.

Programmes like this help specialists develop their professional skills and strengthen cooperation between the university and relevant organisations in preventing suicidal behaviour and providing timely psychological support.
